Chemical Engineering Student Spotlight – Elizabeth Occhi

Elizabeth Occhi is a senior studying Chemical Engineering at the University of Iowa. She is graduating in May of 2021 and looks forward to returning to the UIowa to pursue a Master’s in Geoscience. Learn more about Elizabeth’s undergraduate studies!

How did you choose the UI for your undergraduate studies?

I chose the University of Iowa because of the atmosphere of the campus and engineering building. I felt very welcomed.

What has been your favorite class within the Chemical Engineering Department?

My favorite class within the Chemical Engineering Department was either Thermo/Transport Lab or Design I.

What was your EFA and how did you choose this area?

My elective focus area is in oil and petroleum/energy and the environment. I chose the two elective focus areas because I am very interested in sustainability, especially with regards to groundwater pollution. Therefore, I needed a thorough understanding of geology, sustainability, and chemistry.

What are your post-graduation plans?

I am going to the University of Iowa to work towards a masters in geoscience.

Piece of advice for first-year graduate students?

Chemical engineering is a difficult major. However, with a strong support network, it's a lot easier to get through. Therefore, my only piece of advice would be to build relationships with your chemical engineering peers.

Favorite thing about Iowa City?

My favorite thing about Iowa City is that this is the city where I was able to meet some of my closest friends.
