UI Chemical Engineers tour new Iowa Fertilizer plant in Lee County

University of Iowa Chemical Engineering students toured Iowa Fertilizer Company in Wever, Iowa this semester.  Ralph Butz, chemical engineer and part of plant management staff, led students and faculty on a detailed tour of the $3B process of making ammonia, urea, and nitric acid. Natural gas is the main feedstock and hydrogen the intermediate. The plant was home to sophisticated systems and many high pressure and high temperature processes. The culmination of 100 years of process optimization, catalyst development, and technology development. Thank you to Iowa Fertilizer Company for this wonderful opportunity.
